SLIME TIP: If you do accidentally put too much Borax solution in and the slime goes too hard and not stretchy you can either add more glue (if you have another bottle handy) or add warm water and work it into the mixture. Step 4: Slowly add 1 teaspoon at a time of the Borax solution to the mixture and stir. Add about a teaspoon of the borax and water mixture into the glue/shaving cream bowl and stir. If you want colored slime, use food coloring to add several drops to the mixture before adding contact lens solution.

Combine 1/2 cup water and borax, then slowly add to the glue mixture, stirring as you go. You do not need to use all of the solution, just until it starts to thicken. Add ¼ cup of Sodium Tetraborate (Borax) Solution to the glue and water mixture and stir slowly. If you want colored slime, add food coloring to the glue and water mixture.

Don't worry, we won't make a toxic version that might turn your pet turtle into a monster, but rather a fun version you can add glitter and food coloring to. And since we are scientists, we'll also learn about the chemical principles that allow us to turn two common household items - glue and liquid starch - into the fantastic compound that has both the properties of solids and liquids: slime. Simply mix food dye, liquid starch, and white glue to create your slime, then add plastic leaves, rocks, and little critters to complete the bugged-out fun! When you add other ingredients, such as liquid starch or Borax, the polymers stick to each other and get bunched up. It's these stuck together polymers that give slime its stretchy texture, rather than the more liquid state it appears in the bowl after mixing.

I also like to add fun stuff like various food coloring to tint the slime (different colors mean the kids don't argue about who has what) and even, if I'm feeling daring, glitter. Add the purple glue mixture to your borax water, stirring slowly as you pour it. Add food coloring to the glue and water mixture.

Step 2: Add in the polystyrene beads, and stir well to combine the beads with the glue and water mixture. Step 3: Pour the water and glue mixture into the bowl with the Borax mixture. Slowly add 1 teaspoon at a time of the Borax solution to the mixture and stir.

Mix the glue and baking soda in a bowl then add the contact solution until the mixture begins to thicken. Eventually it will either get too thick to stir, or need a little more borax water mixed in. Once no more water will mix into it (the perfect slime recipe!), take it out of the cup and start kneading it with your hands. Many of the traditional slime recipes that you'll find on the internet are glue-based and use borax or contact lens solution as an activator.
